JAKARTA, Oct 24 (Bernama) — Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will receive the honorary doctorate ‘DR Honoris Causa’ (DR HC) from the Padang State University (UNP), the highest award offered by the university in Indonesia for icons in the field of political education.
Malaysian representative for the Western Sumatra Governor and UNP Prof Dato Seri Dr Alex Ong said the award ceremony will be held at UNP on Oct 29.
“The Dr HC award is being given in recognition of his (Anwar) excellence and to further enhance relations between Malaysia and West Sumatra, especially in the field of education as well as economic growth in western Sumatra,” he told Bernama.
He said Anwar was also scheduled to give a public lecture to more than 5,000 university students including 200 Malaysians in West Sumatra while in Padang.
Meanwhile, UNP Rector Prof Ganefri said the award was a UNP special recognition to Anwar, the first figure from outside Indonesia to receive it.
It was previously awarded to Indonesia’s first female president, Megawati Soekarnoputri.
